Monday, July 14, 2025 - The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has refuted reports claiming that it has cleared Deputy Inspector General of Police, Eliud Lagat, in connection with the death of Albert Ojwang, a teacher and blogger who died in police custody last month.
In a statement issued on Monday, IPOA Chairperson Ahmed
Issack Hassan clarified that investigations into the incident are still ongoing
and no one has been exonerated.
“The reports suggesting that IPOA has exonerated Mr. Lagat
are not only premature but also misleading,” Hassan stated.
“If the investigations find him culpable, IPOA will make
appropriate recommendations to hold him to account.”
IPOA launched the probe on June 8th, 2025, and
confirmed that several suspects have already been arraigned during preliminary
investigations.
The authority emphasized that it is conducting its inquiries
independently and without external influence.
This comes after the High Court declined to issue orders
barring Lagat from resuming office, pending a petition filed by activist Eliud
Matindi.
Justice Chacha Mwita directed Lagat to respond to the case
by July 23rd, noting that he must be granted a fair hearing.
Ojwang was arrested after allegedly posting defamatory
content about DIG Lagat online, following a formal complaint from the police
boss and later died in police custody.
