Tuesday, July 1, 2025 - President William Ruto held high-level talks with French President Emmanuel Macron in Seville, Spain, setting the stage for a historic Africa-France Summit to be held in Nairobi in 2026.
In an official statement, Macron reaffirmed France’s
partnership with Kenya, citing shared commitments to sustainable development,
regional peace, and global cooperation.
“With President William Ruto, we share a common commitment:
that no country should have to choose between development and protecting the
planet,” said Macron.
The Nairobi-hosted summit will be the first Africa-France
Summit held outside France or a Francophone nation - an unprecedented move
signaling France’s intention to broaden its engagement with all African
countries, beyond its former colonies.
The discussions centered on the Pact for Prosperity, People,
and the Planet, an initiative launched in Paris in 2023.
Both leaders emphasized that economic growth and
environmental preservation must go hand in hand.
They also reviewed ongoing bilateral projects focused on
energy transition, sustainable transport, and climate-smart agriculture,
aligning with Kenya’s green growth strategy and France’s climate commitments.
Regional security also featured prominently, with Macron and
Ruto pledging continued collaboration in fostering peace in Somalia, Sudan, and
the Great Lakes region.
France pledged ongoing support for Kenya’s peacekeeping
efforts, recognizing Ruto’s active role as EAC Chair.
