Thursday, June 26, 2025 - Firebrand South African opposition leader, Julius Malema, has called on President William Ruto to immediately end State-sponsored violence and media censorship in Kenya, following the brutal police response to peaceful protests on June 25th.
In a statement released by his party, the Economic Freedom
Fighters (EFF), Malema condemned the Government’s handling of the
demonstrations, which saw numerous injuries and deaths.
"The EFF condemns in the strongest terms the brutal
repression of peaceful protesters, censorship of independent media, and the
growing authoritarianism under Ruto’s regime,” the statement read.
Malema accused Ruto of refusing to lead with dignity and
demanded accountability for those killed during both this year’s and last
year’s anti-Finance Bill protests.
"We call on Ruto to hold those responsible for the
killings to account, end censorship, restore media freedom, and address the
people’s concerns through reform, not force.”
“The world is watching, and Africa is watching,” Malema
stated.
He further criticised the Government for ordering a media
blackout, accusing President Ruto of instructing the Communications Authority
to shut down live broadcasts.
"In
a further act of desperation, the President directed the CA to ban all live
broadcasts of the protest, citing a deliberate misreading of the constitution,
which, in fact, protects freedom of expression and media independence," he
added.
The EFF reiterated its support for Kenyan youth, stating:
"This is a generation that refuses to be silenced and
will not allow their future to be stolen by corrupt elites."
