Thursday, June 26, 2025 - Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has revealed that the Government has not set aside any funds to compensate individuals and businesses whose properties were looted or destroyed during the June 25th protests.
Addressing the media on Thursday, Murkomen urged Parliament
to enact legislation to guide compensation in such situations and impose
stricter penalties on protest organisers.
"Unfortunately, Parliament has not allocated a budget
for compensating victims, and as a Government, we do not have any allocation to
do so," Murkomen stated.
He emphasized the need for a legal framework holding protest
organisers accountable for damage, suggesting that they should bear full
responsibility for losses caused during demonstrations.
"Organisers should be made accountable for the time,
place, and nature of demonstrations.”
“Mombasa is a good example of how public protests should be
conducted," he said.
While ruling out State compensation, Murkomen disclosed that
Government leaders may personally contribute to support those affected.
He blamed “goons” allegedly ferried in from Murang’a, Nyeri,
and Kirinyaga for the destruction, stating that they looted and harassed
civilians into the night.
“The destruction went on until midnight. These goons were
left in town and along major roads, attacking civilians and looting,” he said.
Murkomen estimated that property worth billions of shillings
was destroyed, with supermarkets, electronic shops, and restaurants among the
hardest hit.
