DPP approves murder charges against OCS TALAAM and five others over ALBERT OJWANG’s death in police custody



Monday, June 23, 2025 - The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Renson Ingonga, has approved murder charges against Central Police Station OCS, Samson Talaam, and five others in connection with the death of Albert Ojwang.

In a statement dated Monday, June 23rd, the DPP confirmed that officers James Mukhwana and Peter Kimani, along with John Ngige Gitau, Gin Ammitou Abwao, and Brian Mwaniki Njue, will also face murder charges.

“Following the directive, IPOA submitted the inquiry file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions on June 22, 2025.”

“Upon receipt, the DPP immediately constituted a team of senior prosecutors to conduct a comprehensive review,” read the statement.

The six suspects are set to be arraigned at the Kibera High Court on Monday, June 23rd at 2:00 pm.

Ojwang died while in custody at the Central Police Station after his arrest in Homa Bay,  following a complaint by Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat.

In his statement to IPOA, officer Mukhwana revealed he was instructed by OCS Talaam to recruit inmates to beat Ojwang, allegedly to “discipline” him under orders from DIG Lagat.

“Ojwang was not meant to be killed but disciplined.”

“I am sorry for the death of Ojwang. May God help them to heal the loss.”

“I know it is painful."  he alleged in his statement to IPOA.
