2025 - Nairobi has emerged as the most expensive city in Africa for
international schooling, with a median annual fee of Ksh920,000 (USD 7,116),
according to a new report by the International Schools Database.
The study, which analysed international school fees across
seven African cities, ranked Johannesburg second with a median fee of
Ksh731,000 (USD 5,657), followed by Cairo at Ksh300,000 (USD 2,296).
Nairobi’s fees are more than double those in Cairo, despite
the latter being in a more developed economy.
The Kenyan capital’s higher costs are attributed to rising
demand for premium education driven by the presence of multinational companies,
diplomatic missions, and international NGOs.
Cape Town followed closely behind Cairo, with a median fee
of Ksh515,000 (USD 3,979), while Casablanca, Morocco, registered the
continent’s highest individual international school fee, Ksh1.7 million (USD
13,372).
However, Casablanca’s fees vary widely, with some schools
charging as little as Ksh480,000.
Unlike Casablanca, Nairobi’s international school fees show
less disparity, pointing to consistent quality and standards across
institutions.
The city’s schools often offer globally recognised curricula
such as the International Baccalaureate (IB) and British systems, supported by
high-end facilities and infrastructure.
The report reinforces Nairobi’s growing reputation as an
educational hub in Africa, albeit an expensive one.
