Thursday, May 15, 2025 - Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has strongly condemned the violence that broke out during the launch of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s new political outfit, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), held in Lavington, Nairobi, on Thursday, May 15th.
Kindiki criticized those who use violence to settle
political disputes, terming such actions as a threat to national unity and
democratic progress.
His statement came shortly after suspected goons attempted
to disrupt the event as Gachagua and DCP officials were leaving the venue.
“Our country must exercise democratic tolerance and embrace
issue-based politics.”
“Insults, violence, and divisive rhetoric have no place in
our society,” Kindiki said in a statement.
“We owe it to the current and future generations to build a
nation rooted in peace and mutual respect, even when we disagree.”
Videos from the scene show security officers firing into the
air to disperse the crowd, briefly halting Gachagua’s convoy before calm was
restored.
The party’s slogan, Skiza Wakenya (Listen to
Kenyans), reflects its emphasis on grassroots engagement and inclusivity.
The party’s symbol - a hand holding an ear - underscores its
commitment to listening to citizens.
DCP’s official colors are green, white, and black.
Gachagua named Cleophas Malala as interim Deputy Party
Leader and David Mingati as Chairperson.
Other key appointments include Mithika Linturi (Organizing
Secretary), Cate Waruguru (National Women’s Leader), and Peter Mwathi (Deputy
Chair, Strategy).
Additional roles were assigned to Hesbon Obanga (Secretary
General), Hannah Mutua (Treasurer), Andrew Kiplimo Muge (Director of
Elections), Maina Kamanda (Chair, Council of Eminent Persons), and Alex Khamasi
(National Coordinator-Counties).
