Wednesday, April 23, 2025 - The University of Nairobi (UoN) community is reeling from shock and grief following the tragic death of a third-year medical student, Ndini Dennis Kamunya, whose body was discovered in the university's swimming pool on the morning of Tuesday, April 22, 2025.
Kamunya, who was pursuing a Bachelor of Medicine and
Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB), had earlier shared disturbing posts on WhatsApp
and X (formerly Twitter) that appeared to hint at a battle with depression.
In one chilling message, he wrote that he will be found at
the bottom of the pool, adding, "It is better to drown than to live
forever tense."
His passing has sent waves of sorrow across the university,
prompting the University of Nairobi Students’ Association (UNSA), Faculty of
Health Sciences, to issue a heartfelt statement.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of
our beloved colleague, Ndini Dennis Kamunya. Dennis was a bright and promising
student, known for his dedication to his studies, his warmth, and his quiet
strength,” the statement read in part.
The university has pledged support to affected students as
investigations continue.
