2025 - Tragedy has struck the quiet village of Upanda in Ugunja
Constituency, Siaya County, after nine members of a single family perished in a
horrific overnight house fire suspected to be the work of arsonists.
The devastating incident has left the local community in
shock and mourning.
The victims included a man, his wife, and their seven
children - among them, a Form Four student and a six-month-old baby.
Four of the victims were burnt beyond recognition, adding to
the heartbreak and mystery surrounding the case.
According to the area assistant
chief, Robert Odongo, he received reports of the fire at about 1:00 a.m before
he coordinated with the police and rushed to the scene, where they found the
house still ablaze.
Whispers around the village suggest the tragedy may be
linked to a simmering land dispute involving the family and a neighbor.
While the police have not confirmed the motive, one suspect
has already been taken into custody as investigations continue.
The bodies have been transferred to Siaya County Referral
Hospital for postmortem examinations.
