How thugs posing as clients stole a vehicle and dumped the driver in a thicket in Athi Driver - Cab drivers shouldn’t accept offline bookings (PHOTOs)

Thursday, April 10, 2025 - A privately owned ride-hailing vehicle (Toyota Vitz Reg KDP 503B) was stolen on Wednesday night in an incident that has raised fresh concerns over the risks associated with offline ride arrangements.

According to the vehicle owner, the incident occurred after the driver agreed to carry a group of men who had not made a formal request through the Uber platform.

The unauthorized offline arrangement meant that no digital trail was left on the app, complicating efforts to trace the suspects.

The driver is said to have picked up the men at an undisclosed location before contact was lost.

Several hours later, he was found abandoned in a thicket in Athi River, having reportedly been held hostage and later released without the car.

Efforts to locate the vehicle have been hampered by the fact that its tracking system was disabled shortly after the incident.

The last known movement suggested a possible direction towards Mombasa.

The vehicle owner has now issued a public appeal, offering a cash reward of Ksh 50,000 to anyone who provides credible information leading to the recovery of the vehicle.

Anyone with information about the vehicle’s whereabouts has been urged to report it through any available channels.
