Police recover narcotics after conducting a search in a long-distance bus during an intelligence-led operation (PHOTOs)

Wednesday, August 5, 2026 - Police have recovered 164 suspected narcotic pellets concealed inside a long-distance passenger bus during an intelligence-led operation at the Busia One-Stop Border Post.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), a multi-agency security team intercepted the Nairobi-bound bus on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, as part of ongoing efforts to combat transnational and cross-border crime.

A thorough search of the vehicle led to the discovery of the suspected narcotics hidden inside one of the luggage compartments.

The bus driver was immediately arrested and placed in police custody pending arraignment in court.

 However, an accomplice believed to have been travelling on the same bus managed to escape during the operation.

Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect as investigations continue to determine the origin, ownership, and intended destination of the suspected drugs.

The recovered narcotics and the bus have been secured at Busia Police Station as exhibits awaiting forensic analysis.

The National Police Service said the successful operation highlights the importance of collaboration among security agencies in disrupting cross-border criminal activities, particularly drug trafficking.

NPS reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling transnational drug trafficking networks and appealed to members of the public to continue sharing credible information that can assist law enforcement agencies in preventing and combating crime.
