Wednesday, June 24, 2026 - Matatu operators have assured commuters that public transport services will continue as normal during the planned Gen Z anniversary protests on Thursday, June 25th.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, June 24th,
Matatu Owners Association Chairman, Albert Karakacha, emphasized the sector’s
commitment to serving Kenyans despite concerns over possible disruptions.
“While we are aware of concerns regarding possible
disruption, we encourage all matatu owners, drivers, crew, and staff to remain
calm, exercise restraint, and continue providing transport service responsibly
and professionally,” he said.
Karakacha underscored the critical role of public transport
in facilitating movement across the country, adding that operations would
continue while prioritizing passenger safety.
He condemned acts of violence, vandalism, and destruction
that may arise during demonstrations, stressing that the safety of commuters
and transport workers remains paramount.
“The safety and well-being of passengers, transport workers,
vehicles, business, and the public remain our foremost priority,” he noted.
He further urged stakeholders, including citizens, leaders,
civil society, businesses and Government agencies, to uphold peace, engage in
constructive dialogue, and work collectively towards justice and
accountability.
Meanwhile, Nairobi Police Boss Issa Mohamud has declared that the planned
Gen Z protests scheduled to take place on June 25th are illegal.
Speaking
on Wednesday, June 24th, Mohamud explained that he had not received
any formal notice about the protests as required by law.
"I
want to confirm that we have not received any notification at Central Police
Station or any police station within Nairobi for June 25th.
"A
notification is a requirement that is provided under Section 5 of the Public
Order Act. It should include the purpose of the demonstration, the date, time,
