Wednesday, June 24, 2026 - Interior Cabinet Secretary, Kipchumba Murkomen, has directed police officers to protect peaceful demonstrators during the June 25th protests, which mark one year since the deadly 2024 Gen Z demonstrations.
Speaking at a Peace and Security Meeting in Angata Barikoi
on June 24th, Murkomen urged officers to exercise restraint and
avoid situations that could justify the use of force.
“For those who will engage in peaceful protests tomorrow,
police are ready to give you security and protection so that you can have a
peaceful march,” he stated.
However, Murkomen warned that violent protests will be met
with firm action.
“Anyone who is going to disturb peace, I want to tell you
that our National Police Service is well-equipped to ensure that our country is
safe,” he cautioned.
He further ordered citizens to report to work, children to
attend school and businesses to operate as usual, assuring that security
agencies will remain on high alert.
The anniversary demonstrations are expected to draw large
crowds nationwide, commemorating the 2024 Gen Z-led protests that left dozens
dead after the storming of Parliament.
Meanwhile, Nairobi Regional Commander, Issa Mohamud, has
declared the protests in the Central Business District illegal, citing the
absence of permits or formal notifications.
On his part, President William Ruto has acknowledged
citizens’ right to protest but warned that his Government will not tolerate
violence or destruction of property.
