- Police in Kibwezi, Makueni County, are pursuing two suspects linked to a
botched highway robbery that left one suspect dead after he was accidentally
shot by his accomplice during the incident.
According to police reports, the incident occurred at Kambu
along the busy Nairobi–Mombasa
Highway.
The victim, a driver transporting a newly acquired Subaru
from Mombasa to Nairobi, said the attackers used a staged trick involving a man
pretending to be injured.
As the vehicle approached the Mutomo area, one suspect
reportedly posed as a person on crutches and stepped onto the road, forcing the
driver to slow down.
Two other accomplices then emerged and ordered him to stop.
The driver stated that one of the suspects drew a firearm
and opened fire, but he narrowly escaped by swerving his head.
The bullet instead struck the accomplice who had been
pretending to be injured and attempting to enter the vehicle.
He died on the spot.
The driver sustained injuries and is receiving treatment at Kambu
Sub-County Hospital, while the body of the deceased suspect has
been moved to the facility’s mortuary.
Police say investigations are ongoing as they pursue the
remaining suspects.
