Tuesday, March 24,
2026 - Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has disclosed how he orchestrated
the arrest of Elvis Opiyo, the man accused of planning the acid attack on
gospel singer, Claire Mary.
In a post on X dated March 24th, Sonko revealed
that he personally devised a ruse to lure Opiyo out of hiding.
“We managed to arrest him on Sunday. We tricked him by lying
to him to come to Nairobi, and that’s how we made the arrest. So, justice will
be served,” he stated.
Sonko shared the details during a visit to Kenyatta National
Hospital (KNH), where Claire Mary is undergoing treatment after being ambushed
near Prestige Plaza on Ngong Road on March 17th.
Surveillance footage captured the moment she was doused with
acid, leaving her with severe injuries.
During his hospital visit, Sonko assured Claire that even
though Opiyo claimed to be an officer with the National Intelligence Service
(NIS), he will face justice.
“Elvis Opiyo says that he works for the NIS. Even if so, he
is not above the law; no one sent him to come and burn you with acid. We will
deal with him,” Sonko reaffirmed.
Opiyo, Claire’s estranged partner, was arraigned at Kibera
Law Courts on March 23rd, accused of orchestrating the attack after
their eight-year relationship ended.
Records show Claire had previously reported him to police in
November 2025 for assault and death threats.
Sonko pledged to provide lawyers, cover her legal fees and
settle her hospital bills, promising to stand by her until justice is served.

This morning around 6:13am, I visited Mary Claire, a victim of a brutal acid attack allegedly orchestrated by her ex-boyfriend. What was done to her is cruel, inhuman, and unacceptable.
I stood with her, comforted her, and assured her she is not alone. We… pic.twitter.com/keGjaVaV8i
