Tuesday, 3 March 2026 - Another Kenyan man who was
lured into joining the Russian Army has died in the ongoing war in Ukraine.
John Mwangi Nduta, a former soldier at Eastleigh Airbase,
travelled to Russia in May 2025 after being recruited by an agency known as
Global.
He kept in touch with his family until September, when he
reported being injured and pleaded for help to return home.
Communication stopped soon after.
Fellow soldiers who returned to Kenya later told the family
that Mwangi’s unit had been attacked and he was badly wounded.
This week, confirmation from Russia revealed that Mwangi
died in September while on duty.
His family in Thika is now appealing to the Government to help repatriate
his body for burial.
Mwangi’s death highlights growing concern over the
recruitment of Kenyans into the conflict.
The National Intelligence Service (NIS) recently revealed
that private agencies, and rogue officials have facilitated the enlistment of
ex‑police officers, former soldiers, and civilians aged between their mid‑20s
and 50s.
Recruits are enticed with promises of monthly salaries of
about Ksh350,000, bonuses of up to Ksh1.2 million, and eventual Russian
citizenship.
More than 1,000 Kenyans are believed to have left, with current figures showing 39 hospitalised, 30 repatriated, 28 missing, 35 in camps, 89 on the front line, 11 fatalities.
