Treasury CS, JOHN MBADI, sets the record straight on contesting for an elective seat in 2027 elections amid Homa Bay Governor bid speculation

Friday, January 16, 2026 - Treasury Cabinet Secretary, John Mbadi, has declared that he will not contest any elective position in the 2027 General Elections amid speculation linking him to the Homa Bay gubernatorial seat.

Speaking during the Privatisation and People’s Budget Dialogue on Friday, January 16th, Mbadi dismissed speculation about his political ambitions, stressing that his focus remains on serving the country in his current role.

“I was originally born and raised in Migori. However, that should not make them tell me that I should not vie for the Homa Bay County gubernatorial race.”

“Even so, I want to clarify that I am not interested in becoming Homa Bay County Governor,” he stated.

The Homa Bay seat is expected to attract significant political interest, with incumbent Governor Gladys Wanga seeking reelection.

The contest has already intensified after Deputy Governor Oyugi Magwanga branded Wanga a “one‑term Governor” and vowed to oppose her bid.

“Wanga is a one-term Governor, and her time is up. I sacrificed for you to be the Governor, but you are very ungrateful.”

“Now it is time for payback,” he declared.

Magwanga accused her administration of mismanaging County affairs, citing unpaid contractors and operational challenges.

He further alleged that Wanga’s 2022 candidacy was secured through pressure from national figures, including Mama Ngina Kenyatta, Charity Ngilu, Martha Karua, Fred Matiang’i and Francis Atwoli, who influenced ODM leader, Raila Odinga, to endorse her.
