Tuesday, December 16, 2025 - Fresh details have emerged regarding the tragic accident that claimed the life of former Minister and ex-Lugari MP, Cyrus Jirongo, with an eyewitness account now challenging the version given by the bus driver involved in the collision.
Ephraim Cheptek, a security guard stationed at a petrol
station near the crash site, told journalists that he was the only person awake
at the time of the accident, which occurred at 3 am.
He insisted that Jirongo’s movements before the crash were
unusual, noting that the politician briefly got into the petrol station as
though to refuel but left without doing so.
“When he entered the petrol station, he slowed, and while he
was about to refuel his vehicle, he again drove away and joined the road.”
“So the way he approached the petrol station was unusual,”
Cheptek explained.
The guard dismissed claims that traffic congestion
contributed to the accident, saying the highway was calm and clear.
He added that no vehicle was trailing Jirongo’s Mercedes
before the collision and that traffic only built up after the crash.
“The road was calm, and there was no traffic. It was
after the accident that vehicles began lining up,” he said.
His account directly contradicts the bus driver’s earlier
statement, which alleged that Jirongo was overtaking due to heavy traffic when
the collision occurred.
The driver maintained that the accident was unavoidable,
saying he stopped to prevent his bus from rolling over, leaving Jirongo’s
vehicle to ram into it.
The conflicting testimonies have intensified calls for a
thorough investigation to establish the true circumstances surrounding
Jirongo’s final moments.
