Thursday, December 18, 2025 - An obituary of an elderly Kalenjin man has gone viral on social media after revealing the reason why he resigned from the police service during the colonial era.
According to the obituary, the deceased was recruited into
the police force in the early 1950s and deployed to East Nyeri, where he was
tasked with guarding white settlers.
He faithfully served for three years during a time when
African officers often faced harsh treatment and indignity.
However, his service came to an abrupt end after he refused
an order from his senior officer to wash his clothes, a task he considered
demeaning and outside his duties.
Rather than submit, the obituary notes, the elderly man
chose to resign, a decision that many Kenyans online have praised as an early
act of quiet resistance and self-respect during colonial rule.
