Friday, November 28,
2025 - Kenya has confirmed the death of its first citizen fighting for
Russia in the ongoing war against Ukraine.
The victim, identified as Martin Macharia Mburu, reportedly
travelled to Moscow just over a month ago seeking employment as a driver but
was allegedly coerced into joining combat operations after only three days of
military training.
Ukrainian authorities have shared images of his body and
travel documents confirming his journey, underscoring the growing risks faced
by foreign nationals recruited into the conflict.
Foreign Affairs Minister Musalia Mudavadi disclosed that
about 200 Kenyans are currently fighting for Russia, with recruitment networks
still active both in Kenya and Moscow.
Some of those rescued from the war zone revealed that they
were forced to assemble drones and handle hazardous chemicals without proper
training or protective gear.
President William Ruto last week appealed to the Ukrainian Government
to secure the release of Kenyans trapped in the conflict.
Kenya’s embassy in Moscow has also documented injuries among
recruits, who were allegedly promised up to $18,000 (Approx Ksh 2.4
million) to cover visas, travel, and
accommodation.
The Government has urged citizens to remain vigilant against deceptive recruitment schemes and reiterated its commitment to securing the safe return of those caught in the fighting.
