Tuesday, October 28, 2025 - A tragic plane crash near Diani Airport in Kwale County has claimed the lives of twelve people, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) confirmed on Monday, October 27th, 2025.

The aircraft, a Cessna 208B Grand Caravan registered as 5Y-CCA, went down shortly after takeoff en route to Kichwa Tembo Airstrip in the Maasai Mara.

Operated by Mombasa Air Safari, a regional charter airline, the plane was carrying tourists when it crashed in the Tsimba Golini area during morning hours.

“The aircraft had 12 persons on board,” KCAA stated, adding that Government agencies had been dispatched to the site to investigate the cause and impact of the accident.

Manufactured in 2007, the aircraft bore serial number 208B-1248 and was powered by a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-114A turboprop engine.

Known for its reliability on short runways and remote airstrips, the Grand Caravan typically accommodates up to 12 occupants.

Initially registered in the United States as N12686, the aircraft was deregistered in June 2007 before being exported to Tanzania under the registration 5H-DAN.

It was later re-registered in Kenya in March 2013 and delivered to Mombasa Air Safari, where it served domestic routes for over a decade.

The aircraft had no prior record of accidents or serious incidents before this crash.
