Scare as DCI officer’s firearm accidentally goes off in court leaving two officers and three civilians injured



Tuesday, September 16, 2025 - Two officers and three civilians sustained injuries on Tuesday morning following an accidental discharge of a firearm belonging to a Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer at the Bungoma Law Courts.

According to Judiciary Spokesperson Paul Ndemo, the incident occurred at 10:50 a.m during the hearing of a criminal case in the High Court.

The injured include the DCI officer, a Kenya Prisons officer and three civilians.

All five were rushed to Bungoma Referral Hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.

“There were no serious injuries or fatalities. All court officials and members of the public present during the hearing are safe,” Ndemo assured, adding that the county security team has visited the court premises to assess the situation.

Bungoma County Police Commander Anderson Njagi confirmed that investigations have been launched to determine the cause of the accidental discharge.

He emphasized that security agencies are committed to preventing similar incidents in the future.

“We want to reassure the Judiciary of their safety and cooperation in this matter. We will do everything possible to ensure such incidents do not recur,” Njagi stated.

The DCI also responded to the incident, pledging to undertake appropriate measures to ensure accountability and address any procedural lapses.

The Judiciary has promised to keep the public informed as investigations continue.
