NATEMBEYA speaks on United Opposition’s flagbearer to face RUTO as GACHAGUA declares 2027 presidential bid

Monday, September 15, 2025 - Trans Nzoia Governor, George Natembeya, has stated that the United Opposition has not settled on a presidential flag bearer for the 2027 General Elections.

Speaking on Monday, September 15th, Natembeya emphasized that the selection process will be merit-based, focusing on a candidate’s ability to mobilize public support and resources.

“We must agree as the opposition. No one should prematurely declare themselves the flag bearer.”

“These are just cold facts,” Natembeya said.

“We will evaluate leaders based on the people they bring and the resources they can marshal.”

His remarks come amid internal tensions within the Democratic Action Party - Kenya (DAP-K), where Natembeya serves as Deputy Party Leader.

Last month, the party’s Parliamentary Group, led by Cherangany MP, Patrick Simiyu Barasa, and accused Natembeya of attempting a hostile takeover of the party’s leadership, currently headed by Eugene Wamalwa.

The group cited a coordinated effort by external forces to destabilize the party.

Meanwhile, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has publicly declared his intention to run for the presidency in 2027.

Speaking at a rally in Nyeri, Gachagua boldly declared himself as the only opposition figure capable of unseating President William Ruto.

I have come home to say that I have accepted to vie for the presidency of the Republic of Kenya.”

“Kenyans have looked and said the only leader who can remove Ruto from office is Riggy G, and I have come home to seek your blessings,” he told congregants.
