Tuesday, September 2, 2025 - People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader, Martha Karua, has dismissed claims that she is politically realigning herself with President William Ruto.
The speculation was sparked by remarks from a Kenya Kwanza
ally who alleged that Karua, a senior counsel, had softened her stance and
decided to rally behind the President.
In a sharp rebuttal on Tuesday, Karua urged her supporters
to ignore what she described as fake news, maintaining that she continues to
back former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s ‘wantam’ agenda.
“I do not belong to William Ruto’s praise choir, and I
believe he is the most unsuitable character ever to occupy high office,” Karua
declared.
Her remarks come against the backdrop of shifting political
alliances as the country heads toward the 2027 General Elections.
Karua was the running mate of Raila Odinga in the 2022
polls, and her former partner’s cooperation with Ruto through the Broad-Based
Agreement had fueled speculation she might follow suit.
Earlier this year, Karua announced that she had parted ways
with Raila over his closeness with Ruto, adding that she would only consider
working with him again if he severed ties with the President and supported her
bid.
She has since confirmed her intention to vie for the
presidency in 2027.
Meanwhile, President Ruto has continued to call for
political unity, saying he is open to working with leaders from across the
divide.
