16, 2025 - The County Government of Homa Bay has interdicted a Human
Resource Officer from the Department of Roads, Transport, and Public Works
following allegations of involvement in the abduction and torture of journalist
Habil Onyango.
In a statement, Chief Officer of Public Communication,
Atieno Otieno, confirmed the officer’s immediate dismissal, describing the move
as a procedural step to facilitate an impartial investigation.
The County pledged full cooperation with the National Police
Service and other investigative agencies.
“The County Government condemns in the strongest terms any
form of violence, intimidation, or criminal activity,” Otieno stated.
Governor Gladys Wanga’s administration reiterated its
zero-tolerance stance on abuse of office, warning that any staff member found
culpable will face severe disciplinary action.
Onyango, a journalist with People Daily, was
reportedly abducted on Sunday, September 14th, after publishing an
exposé on a fraudulent employment scheme allegedly involving the HR officer.
According to the Media Council of Kenya, a senior County
official orchestrated the attack.
Onyango revealed he was lured to a hotel, assaulted, forced
to inhale bhang, and threatened with death.
His gadgets were confiscated, and he was driven around the County
before managing to escape.
“They told me to write an apology clearing the HR officer of
any wrongdoing,” Onyango told reporters.
Investigations are ongoing, with pressure mounting on
authorities to ensure justice is served and press freedom upheld.
