Monday, September 15,
2025 - Embakasi East MP, Babu Owino, has addressed a viral image showing
him alongside President William Ruto’s son, Nick Ruto, at a nightclub.
In a statement issued on Sunday, September 14th,
Owino clarified that the photo was taken in 2018 and does not reflect his
current lifestyle.
“The last time I drank alcohol was on January 17, 2020.”
“I’ve been sober for five years. That photo was taken in
2018,” Owino stated.
The clarification comes amid online speculation, with some
questioning the MP’s association with Nick Ruto given his vocal criticism of
the President.
The timing also coincides with growing uncertainty around
Owino’s future in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
On August 29th, Owino declared his independence
from party politics, asserting that his personal brand surpasses most political
outfits.
“Babu Owino alone is a political party. I can be elected
without one,” he said.
Currently, Owino is aligned with the Kenya Moja faction - a
youthful political group positioning itself as an alternative force.
The coalition includes Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and MPs, Caleb Amisi, Antony Kibagendi, Gathoni Wamuchomba and Clive Gisairo with Owino revealing that the group has attracted interest from over 70 legislators.
