2025 - Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has abruptly ended his tour
of the United States and is set to return to Kenya to help the Democracy for
Citizens Party (DCP) prepare for the upcoming by-elections.
In a statement on Thursday, August 14th, Gachagua
expressed regret over cancelling the remainder of his itinerary, saying the
engagements would be rescheduled to early 2026.
“I regret being unable to visit the remaining states since I
need to get back home to join our party in preparation for the by-elections,”
he said.
The former DP departed Kenya on July 9th, 2025,
accompanied by his wife, Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, arriving in the U.S two days
later.
His month-long tour included stops in Los Angeles, Southern
California, Kansas City, Boston, Seattle, Washington, Texas and Baltimore.
While abroad, Gachagua used public forums to sharply
criticize President William Ruto’s administration, accusing it of human rights
violations and even calling on the U.S to impose travel sanctions against the
President.
He also controversially linked Ruto to alleged meetings with
terrorists - remarks that prompted Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen to warn that
Gachagua will be required to record a formal statement upon his return.
His return comes shortly after the Independent Electoral and
Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced that by-elections will be held on
November 27th, 2025.
The polls will fill 16 MCA seats, one Senate seat in
Baringo, six National Assembly seats, and one ward seat in Bungoma.
Gachagua thanked Kenyans in the U.S for their hospitality
and praised DCP’s local chapters for “superb planning and meticulous
coordination” during his visit.
