Friday, August 22, 2025 - Thousands of Kenyans living in the United States could be affected by a new directive from President Donald Trump’s administration ordering a sweeping review of more than 55 million foreign visa holders.
In a statement released on Thursday, August 21st,
the U.S. Department of State confirmed that the review will target tourists and
other visa holders from multiple countries.
The department said the move is part of ongoing vetting
measures aimed at identifying violations that could render foreigners
ineligible to remain in the U.S.
Speaking to the Associated Press (AP), officials
acknowledged that the process will be lengthy but emphasized that continuous
checks are necessary to uphold U.S. laws.
“We review all available information as part of our vetting,
including law enforcement or immigration records or any other information that
comes to light after visa issuance, indicating a potential ineligibility,” the
department said.
Authorities clarified that the 55 million figure includes
individuals currently outside the U.S. who hold valid multiple-entry visas.
This means even legally approved visitors could face visa
revocation and possible deportation if found in violation of conditions.
According to estimates by Pew Research Center demographer,
Jeffrey Passel, about 30,000 Kenyans in the U.S. are currently living without
authorization - typically as a result of visa overstays.
At the same time, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio
announced the immediate suspension of visas for foreign commercial truck
drivers.
Rubio argued that the rising number of foreign drivers
operating heavy trucks posed safety risks and undermined American truckers.
“Effective immediately, we are pausing all issuance of
worker visas for commercial truck drivers,” he posted on X.
