Thursday, August 7, 2025 - President William Ruto has unveiled a plan to cut motorcycle prices by 50% in a move aimed at empowering low-income Kenyans and boosting the boda boda sector.
Speaking on Thursday, August 7th, 2025, during a
meeting with boda boda officials from all sub-counties at State House,
Nairobi, Ruto said the new measures will allow more Kenyans to afford
motorcycles and engage in income-generating activities.
Under the proposed initiative, the cost of a motorcycle will
reduce from Ksh190,000 to Ksh95,000. The required deposit will drop from
Ksh70,000 to Ksh9,500, and daily repayments from Ksh500 to just Ksh180.
The Head of State also revealed his intention to push for
legislative reforms to remove existing taxes on motorcycles, potentially
lowering prices by an additional Ksh10,000.
“I want us to have a plan where an ordinary citizen has the
chance to own a motorcycle,” Ruto said.
He described boda boda riders as hardworking
entrepreneurs who deserve state support and promised to work with stakeholders
to enact self-regulation laws to help the sector grow.
Ruto also directed police to release impounded motorcycles
not linked to crime within a week, calling it part of a broader plan to support
the sector’s development.
