Tuesday, July 29, 2025 - Two police officers have been sentenced to 35 years in prison each for the murder of Dennis Lusava, a suspect who died in police custody following a dispute over a face mask violation during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Delivering the ruling on Tuesday, July 29th,
Justice Reuben Nyakundi of the Eldoret High Court found that the prosecution
had proven beyond reasonable doubt that the two constables were responsible for
Lusava’s death in October 2020 at the Mbururu Police Post in Kakamega County.
According to court testimony, Lusava initially fled arrest
with the help of bystanders.
The officers later lured him back to the station, where he
was brutally assaulted while handcuffed.
Witnesses described how the officers kicked, punched, and
beat him with electric cables.
He was denied medical care and eventually died from his
injuries.
The court further heard that the officers secretly disposed
of Lusava’s body in River Nzoia to conceal evidence of torture.
Justice Nyakundi condemned the officers’ actions as a
"blatant abuse of power," noting that they showed no remorse or
accountability.
The conviction was supported by 21 prosecution witnesses and
27 exhibits.
