Tuesday, July 29, 2025 - Senior Superintendent Vincent Ochola Gumbi of the Kenya Prisons Service has been selected for the prestigious 2025 Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship, the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi announced on Tuesday, July 29.
Gumbi, who currently serves at the Kenya Prisons Service
Headquarters, is set to depart for the United States in August to begin the
10-month fellowship at Virginia Commonwealth University.
The Humphrey Fellowship is a non-degree, mid-career
professional exchange program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.
“Congratulations Vincent Ochola Gumbi for your selection to
the 2025 Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship,” the embassy’s statement read.
Established in 1978 in honor of former U.S. Vice President
Hubert H. Humphrey, the program promotes international cooperation and public
service.
It includes a range of professional development
opportunities such as the Humphrey Seminar, individualized coursework,
leadership workshops, and a Global Leadership Forum held in Washington, D.C.
Eligibility for the fellowship requires applicants to be
citizens of eligible countries, have a bachelor’s degree, a minimum of five
years of professional experience, and demonstrate a strong commitment to public
service.
English proficiency is mandatory, with applicants required
to submit TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo scores.
Ochola’s selection follows the May 28th
announcement that two Kenya Defence Forces cadets - Moses Kipsang and Philemon
Munjuri - were admitted to top U.S. military academies under a partnership with
the United States Africa Command (USAFRICOM).
