Monday, June 23, 2025 - The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has thrown its weight behind the planned June 25th protests commemorating the young Kenyans who died during last year’s anti-Finance Bill demonstrations.
In a statement released on Monday, ODM urged youths across
the country to turn out in large numbers to honor the fallen Gen Z protestors.
“As we mark the anniversary of the Gen Z protests, we urge
Kenyans to reject division. Peaceful protest is a constitutional right, and we
stand with those who will commemorate this day in the name of freedom and
democracy,” read the statement signed by Secretary General Edwin Sifuna.
In the same breath, Sifuna defended party leader Raila
Odinga following a controversial Standard headline that branded him a
"Gen Z betrayer" for going to bed with the Government.
“ODM is not part of the Kenya Kwanza government.”
“Any cooperation we engage in is solely for national peace
and democratic stability,” the party stated, accusing the newspaper of
“partisan propaganda disguised as journalism.”
Meanwhile, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura has announced
that no demonstrations will be allowed on June 25th, urging Kenyans
to commemorate the day privately.
“Anyone wishing to mark the day is free to do so from home.
June 25th will proceed as a normal working day,” he said.
According to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority
(IPOA), 60 protestors were killed including 29 in Nairobi alone.
