National Police Service cracks the whip after seven-month pregnant woman suffers miscarriage in custody

Friday, June 13, 2025 - The National Police Service (NPS) has interdicted the Officer in Charge of Rwanyambo Police Post in Kinangop, Nyandarua County, following a disturbing incident where a seven-month pregnant woman suffered a miscarriage while in custody.

In an official statement on Friday, NPS spokesperson, Muchiri Nyaga, expressed deep regret over the incident and assured the public that immediate action had been taken.

“To ensure a swift, impartial, and transparent investigation, the officer in charge of Rwanyambo Police Post has been interdicted with immediate effect,” the statement read.

The Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) has launched an investigation in collaboration with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to determine the events that led to the miscarriage.

The woman had been detained after her employer accused her of failing to account for Ksh 18,000 in sales.

According to her sister, police refused to release her even as the family tried to raise the money.

“I pleaded with them, explaining our mother was sick and her children were alone at home, but they refused,” she said.

The case has intensified public scrutiny over police conduct and raised fresh concerns about the treatment of detainees.
