Wednesday, May 21, 2025 - Outspoken Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has called on Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu to take firm action against Kenyan activists operating within Tanzanian borders.
Speaking during a Senate session on Wednesday, the vocal Senator
and close ally of President William Ruto, commended President Suluhu for her
firm stance against what he termed as “disruptive activism.”
He called for the arrest and prosecution of those allegedly
interfering with Tanzania’s internal affairs.
“Tanzania is a very peaceful country. What President Suluhu
implied is that we must respect each other’s sovereignty.”
“Activists who roam across East Africa interfering with
domestic matters must be stopped,” Cherargei said.
He further claimed that the activists are funded by foreign
elements intent on destabilising African governance and unity.
Cherargei linked their activities to recent unrest in Kenya,
suggesting international actors were behind the Gen Z protests.
“I urge President Suluhu to assist Kenya in disciplining
these ill-behaved activists, who have no respect for leadership or peace,” he
added.
Cherargei’s sentiments echoed those of Prime Cabinet
Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, who, in a TV interview, backed Suluhu’s concerns
and criticised the conduct of some Kenyan activists abroad.
Several Kenyan activists, including Boniface Mwangi, Hanifa
Adan, and Hussein Khalid, had travelled to Tanzania to support opposition
leader Tundu Lissu during his treason trial.
Mwangi was later arrested at a Dar es Salaam hotel, and his
whereabouts remain unknown.
