Friday, May 9, 2025 - American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected as the new Pope of the Catholic Church, taking the name Pope Leo XIV.
The announcement was made on Thursday, May 8th, following a two-day papal conclave that required four voting rounds.
Pope Leo XIV, aged 69, becomes the 267th leader of the global Catholic Church and the first American to hold the papacy in history.
His election follows the death of Pope Francis, making him the second consecutive pontiff from the Americas.
Before his election, Cardinal Prevost headed the Vatican’s Dicastery for Bishops, a key office responsible for evaluating and nominating senior clergy.
Appointed to the post by Pope Francis, he previously served as the Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru and had dedicated nearly three decades to missionary work.
A Chicago native born in 1955, Pope Leo XIV is of Italian, French, and Spanish descent. He is a long-serving member of the Order of St. Augustine (O.S.A.), having joined in 1977 and taken his solemn vows in 1981.
Last year, he visited Kenya and officially opened the Augustinian Chapel next to Tangaza University in Nairobi’s Karen area, highlighting his global pastoral engagement.
