Monday, May 12, 2025 - Homa Bay Deputy Governor Joseph Oyugi Magwanga has spoken out following a brazen assassination attempt on Sunday night, just days after Kasipul MP, Charles Were, was shot dead in Nairobi.
The Deputy Governor's official vehicle was ambushed between
9:15 p.m. and 9:20 p.m. as it returned from one of his farms.
Magwanga was not in the car at the time; only his security
detail was present.
A gunfight ensued, but no injuries were reported.
Magwanga revealed that he had received credible threats and
changed his usual route home just hours before the incident.
He arrived safely 30 minutes before the attackers struck his
vehicle, possibly saving his life.
Speaking on Ramogi FM,
Magwanga stated: "I received intel that I was being trailed.”
“I diverted to Gamba and used an alternative route.”
“My security was prepared and opened fire after identifying
suspicious individuals near my gate."
Despite admitting his life is now in imminent danger, he has
urged Homa Bay residents to remain calm and avoid retaliation.
A preliminary police report suggests political motives
behind the attack.
Magwanga, who also hails from Kasipul, becomes the second
high-profile leader from the area targeted within a week, following the fatal
shooting of MP Were on April 30th in Nairobi.
