Friday, August 23,2024 - Many Kenyans led by Kileleshwa Ward MCA, Robert Alai, have been questioning whether Narc Kenya Chairperson, Martha Karua, has a valid license to practise as a lawyer after she was seen in court defending businessman Jimmy Wanjigi on Tuesday.
A quick search on the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) website
shows that her practising status is active with a certificate in issue for this
year.
Alai and some pro-Government bloggers had on Wednesday
morning taken to social media castigating the LSK for allegedly allowing some
advocates to practice without a license.
"How do you force young men and women to pay for
practising certificates while Martha Karua and Eugene Wamalwa who have all been
part of the cog can’t pay for theirs?” read his statement in part.
But as the search revealed, Karua’s status is active.
Section 9 of the Advocates Practice Rules states that no
person shall be qualified to act as an advocate unless he has in place a Practising
Certificate (PC).
It is the Practising Certificate that entitles the advocate
to become a member of the LSK and to practice law in the country.
It is to be taken every year.
