August 09, 2026 - The Independent Electoral and Boundaries
Commission (IEBC) has gazetted new contribution and spending limits for
candidates and political parties in preparation for the August 2027 General
Election.
In a notice issued on Friday, August 7, the Commission
capped presidential campaign expenditure at Ksh6.1 billion.
Limits were also set for other elective positions, with
Nairobi County recording the highest gubernatorial ceiling at Ksh181.3 million,
while Lamu County registered the lowest at Ksh28.6 million.
For National Assembly contests, North Horr constituency
topped the list at Ksh100.4 million, compared to Wundayi in Taita Taveta, which
was capped at Ksh15.4 million.
Political parties will face an overall expenditure ceiling
of Ksh24.45 billion.
IEBC outlined allocations including Ksh375 million for
venues, Ksh1.066 billion for publicity materials, Ksh2.51 billion for
advertising, and Ksh332.9 million for campaign personnel.
Transportation costs were set at Ksh16.1 billion, while
election agents, communication, security, accommodation, and administrative
expenses were assigned specific limits ranging from Ksh2.08 billion to Ksh24.9
million.
IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon stressed that the
regulations are designed to safeguard electoral integrity.
“The prescribed Contribution and Spending Limits are
intended to promote a level playing field by ensuring that financial resources
do not disproportionately determine political participation, access to voters
or electoral competition,” he said.
The announcement comes days after IEBC appointed Ruth
Kulundu as Acting Chief Executive Officer and Commission Secretary.
