2026 - As investigations into the tragic fire at Utumishi Girls Academy
that claimed the lives of 16 students continue, it has emerged that the tragedy
has directly affected families of senior police officers.
According to reports, one of the students suspected of being
involved in the dormitory arson is the daughter of a senior police officer.
In a heartbreaking twist, another senior officer's daughter
is among the 16 students who perished in the inferno.
The developments have added a layer of complexity to the
ongoing investigations, with sources indicating heightened tension at Vigilance
House, the headquarters of the National Police Service.
Following the tragedy, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba
Murkomen revealed that a majority of students at Utumishi Girls Academy are
children of officers serving in the National Police Service (NPS).
“Most of the children who attend school here are children of
our officers serving in the National Police Service. As a ministry and family,
we stand with everyone,” Murkomen said.
The deadly fire left dozens of students injured and
traumatised, prompting swift Government intervention and the indefinite closure
of the school.
Meanwhile, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI)
has identified seven students believed to have been involved in the dormitory
fire.
In a statement issued on Sunday, May 31st, the
agency said detectives relied on CCTV footage recovered from the school, as
well as enhanced forensic analysis conducted at the Forensic Imaging and
Acoustic Laboratory, to positively identify the suspects.
“Further analysis of the CCTV footage, conducted in collaboration with the teachers, has enabled the investigation team to confirm the identity of seven students who participated in the arson before escaping the scene,” the DCI stated.
