Friday, December 05, 2025 - Former Mungiki leader turned pastor, Ndura Waruinge, has opened up about the strict internal codes that once governed the sect and how married members who were accused of infidelity were punished.
Speaking during a radio interview on Friday, December 5th, 2025, Waruinge, who is now the founder of Crusade For Christ Ministries, said the once dreaded sect enforced rigid rules that left no room for secret affairs.
“When I was in Mungiki, I had a wife, but I was operating like a king, and you know a king cannot operate with just one wife.”
“What was not allowed in Mungiki was having a side chick or an affair outside your marriage,” he explained.
According to Waruinge, anyone caught with a woman who was not their wife or officially recognised partner faced 25 strokes of the cane.
Even senior figures were not spared.
“For example, if I was married and wanted to take another wife, I had to make sure my first wife knew and consented.”
“If someone was ever caught with a woman they had not married, they were given 25 strokes of the cane,” he said.
He recalled being punished himself and noted that former leader, Maina Njenga, once endured 75 strokes for violating the sect’s rules.
“I was once beaten myself. Even Maina Njenga was given 75 strokes of the cane for misbehaving in matters of infidelity.”
“It was a very strict rule, and everyone faced the consequences,” Waruinge added.
Beyond relationships, Waruinge disclosed that Mungiki banned alcohol and cigarettes, though bhang was permitted.
Theft or dishonesty carried even harsher penalties.
“Theft, swindling, or robbing other members was strictly forbidden and punishable with 100 strokes of the cane,” he revealed.
