19, 2025 - ODM party leader, Oburu Oginga, has declared that the Orange
Democratic Movement will not settle for an opposition role in the 2027 General
Elections.
Speaking on Wednesday, November 19th, Oburu
dismissed claims that ODM could be weakened or divided under his leadership.
He vowed to consolidate the party’s strength ahead of the
polls, warning those attempting to split the movement that their efforts would
not succeed.
“Those who want to break ODM, it will never happen in my
hands.”
“We shall not allow ODM to be divided. We are going to move
forward and make ODM stronger, so that when it comes to 2027, we either go it
alone or negotiate with other parties for a good deal,” he said.
Oburu emphasized that ODM was never formed to remain in
opposition.
“There is nothing like forming a party to be in the
opposition. I will lead ODM to government, not opposition,” he declared.
His remarks come amid internal division over ODM’s political
pact with President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration.
Some members have expressed discomfort with the alignment,
warning that it could dilute ODM’s identity.
During the party’s 20th anniversary celebrations
in Mombasa last week, Siaya Governor James Orengo criticized the relationship,
arguing that it is Ruto who needs ODM’s support, not the reverse.
He cautioned against the party losing its people-centered
foundation, citing African liberation movements that collapsed after abandoning
their principles.
“ODM is a party for the people, by the people. It cannot be
swallowed,” Orengo said, urging members to safeguard the party’s future
electoral prospects.
