Tuesday, October 14, 2025 - Under fire Nairobi Governor, Johnson Sakaja, has addressed growing concerns over the national Government’s involvement in city affairs, following President William Ruto’s recent remarks about a major overhaul of the capital.
During his Sunday address, President Ruto decried the
deteriorating state of Nairobi, citing uncollected garbage, poor drainage, and
inadequate street lighting as major concerns.
He hinted that the national Government, in collaboration
with private sector players, may take up some functions to accelerate service
delivery and restore the city’s dignity.
Sakaja clarified that the initiative is not political
interference but a strategic partnership between the County and national Governments.
“There’s no takeover. This is a collaborative effort to
improve Nairobi through private sector partnerships,” Sakaja said.
He cited a project with a Chinese firm to convert garbage
from Dandora into 45 megawatts of power, backed by a power sale agreement with
the Ministry of Energy.
Sakaja emphasized that Nairobi’s unique role as home to the
Executive, Judiciary and Legislature requires joint efforts.
“Wananchi don’t care who’s responsible - they just want
services delivered,” he added.
