Tuesday, October 28, 2025 - Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary, Musalia Mudavadi, has confirmed that the Kenyan Government is actively working to repatriate citizens trapped in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
In a statement issued on October 27th, Mudavadi
revealed that diplomatic engagements with Russian authorities have been
underway for months, with recent progress made towards securing the safe return
of affected Kenyans.
“The Government has constructively engaged the Russian
Ministry of Foreign Affairs to facilitate the release and safe passage of
Kenyans in distress,” Mudavadi stated.
He noted that some individuals had been detained in military
camps across Russia, having been lured into combat through deceptive
recruitment schemes.
Russian officials acknowledged the complexity of the
situation, citing the involvement of agents who misrepresented themselves as Government
affiliates and used falsified information to recruit foreign nationals.
Mudavadi emphasized that Kenya’s mission in Moscow is
actively identifying detained citizens, issuing emergency travel documents and
coordinating their return.
Both Governments have agreed to release those held against
their will and maintain communication with others still in detention.
"The
Governments of Kenya and Russia have also reached an agreement that those being
held without their consent should be released to our Mission in Moscow with
immediate effect.”
"The
Embassy will also continue to be in contact where possible with the others and
facilitate those who manage to get out of the camps and wish to return
home," he stated.
Earlier this month, Kenya also reached out to Ukraine for
assistance in repatriating nationals reportedly captured while fighting on the
Russian frontline.
Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary, Korir Sing’Oei,
confirmed that the Government is working with Ukrainian authorities to ensure
consular access and safe return for those affected.
