Thursday, October 9, 2025 - Former U.S First Lady, Michelle Obama, has shed light on a topic many women experience but few discuss openly: menopause.
In a recent episode of her Michelle Obama: The Light Podcast,
she shared what it was like to navigate intense hot flashes and hormonal
shifts, all while fulfilling her duties in the White House.
Michelle revealed that her symptoms began during Barack
Obama’s first term as President.
“You wake up one day and you are different,” she said,
describing the sudden onset of heat and sweating that left her drenched
mid-speech.
“It felt like a furnace was lit inside me,” she added,
recalling one trip where she endured nearly 40 hot flashes.
Despite the discomfort, Michelle powered through public
appearances, speeches, and travel.
“I was the First Lady - I had to be polished, composed, and
camera-ready,” she said.
But behind the scenes, she was struggling to manage the
physical toll.
Eventually, she turned to hormone replacement therapy, which
she says made a significant difference.
“We need to talk about the symptoms,” she urged.
“Women aren’t taught to recognize what’s happening to their
bodies.”
She emphasized that transitions like menopause should be
embraced, not feared.
“If we’re alive enough to have a transition, we’re blessed.”
Now in her 60s, Michelle says she’s living her best life.
“I don’t wish to be 20 again. There’s real freedom in this
stage,” she
said with a laugh.
Looking ahead to her 70s and 80s, she’s excited for what’s
to come.
'And I'm already thinking about my 70s and 80s, I want to be
able to do some of this stuff in my 80s.'
