Thursday, October 9, 2025 - Former athlete, Abraham Chelanga, narrowly escaped death after a shocking incident along the Kapseret–Kimumu Road on Wednesday afternoon.
According to initial reports, the incident occurred at
around 3:00 PM as Chelanga was driving home in his Toyota Hilux single-cab pickup
after completing a successful maize harvest from his farm.
Chelanga was reportedly stopped by a traffic police officer,
said to be attached to Langas
Police Station, who then entered his vehicle under unclear
circumstances and insisted on accompanying him.
During the drive, the officer allegedly demanded a bribe of KSh 10,000, which Chelanga declined to pay.
The officer remained in the vehicle until they reached the Coca-Cola area, where he
eventually alighted.
Moments later, a civilian on a boda boda,
believed to have been in communication with the officer earlier and who had
been trailing the vehicle, opened fire, hitting the
vehicle’s left rear tyre.
The gunshot caused Chelanga to briefly lose control of the
vehicle, but he managed to stabilize it and escape with minor injuries.
Eyewitnesses allege that after the shooting, the armed boda boda rider quickly collected the bullet cartridges before
fleeing the scene, raising suspicions that the attack was well-coordinated.
It remains unclear whether the gunman was a plainclothes police officer
or a hired assassin.
The matter has since been reported at Eldoret Central Police Station,
and investigations are expected to commence immediately.
Many in the community, including Chelanga’s friends and
former colleagues, believe the incident was a targeted assassination attempt, calling for
a transparent and unbiased
investigation to
ensure justice is served.
Chelanga has in the past received death threats connected to a prime one-acre parcel of land in Eldoret town.
