Monday, September 15, 2025 - Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has called on President William Ruto and ODM party leader, Raila Odinga, to take decisive action against Cooperatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya, accusing him of interfering in County and party politics.
Speaking during a church service on Sunday, September 14th,
Barasa claimed Oparanya has been using local MPs to express dissatisfaction
with his cabinet role and lobby for reassignment to the Treasury docket.
Barasa urged the President to either restrain or dismiss
Oparanya.
“We are tired now… If he fails to work, there is no need to
use a seat meant to unite us to destroy us.”
The Governor also accused Oparanya of fueling political
instability in Kakamega and undermining ODM’s leadership.
Oparanya, who was appointed CS in August 2024, has denied
the allegations, reaffirming his loyalty to ODM while criticizing recent County
party elections as irregular and contrary to party procedures.
The escalating tensions between Barasa and Oparanya reflect
deeper divisions within ODM’s Western Kenya base, raising concerns about unity
ahead of the 2027 elections.
