2025 - United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary General, Hassan Omar, has
sharply criticised Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen over the
recent decision to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organisation
in Kenya.
Speaking on Sunday, September 21st, during a
Palestine solidarity rally at Uhuru Park in Nairobi, Omar said the move does
not reflect the sentiments of many Muslims in Kenya and across the globe.
“I saw my brother gazette the Muslim organisation as a
terrorist group.”
“I do not share that position,” Omar declared.
“If anything, we as Muslims should consider gazetting the
Zionist State of Israel as a terrorist organisation.”
Omar further called for a re-evaluation of Kenya’s foreign
policy, urging the Government to strengthen ties with the Muslim world and
reconsider its relationship with Israel.
“Kenya has more strategic interests in the Muslim world than
it does in Israel.”
“We should ensure we do not engage in any business with
Israel,” he added.
Murkomen’s decision, published in a gazette notice dated
September 19th, listed both the Muslim Brotherhood and
Hizb-ur-Tahrir as terrorist entities under the 2025 Prevention of Terrorism
Order.
The designation, made under the Prevention of Terrorism Act,
2012, bans all activities of the groups, freezes their assets and criminalises
any form of support.
The Muslim Brotherhood, founded in Egypt in 1928, is a Sunni
Islamist movement with global affiliates.
While it promotes Islamic governance and social activism, it
has faced accusations of fostering extremism and has been outlawed in several
countries, including some Muslim-majority states.
Murkomen stated that the orders will remain in force
indefinitely unless revoked or overturned by a court, sparking debate across
political and religious circles.
