Monday, September 29, 2025 - A somber mood hangs over Nakuru County after a devastating road accident near Kikopey in Gilgil claimed 13 lives on Sunday, September 28th.
The crash occurred along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway and
involved a matatu, a lorry, and a personal car.
The matatu, reportedly ferrying passengers to a family event
in Nakuru, was overtaking when it collided head on with a truck.
Only three people, two children and one adult, survived and
were rushed to Gilgil Sub-County Hospital.
Among the survivors was Steven Weru, who was driving to
Kisumu.
“I was right behind the matatu. When the crash happened, I
had no time to react.”
“I veered off the road, and my car was hit slightly,” he
recounted, pointing to the damage.
Despite his injuries, Weru sprang into action. “I broke the
windscreen with my bare hands to help.”
“We handed a child to the ambulance. Inside, it was
horrifying - many were already gone.”
Nakuru police commander Emmanuel Epuru confirmed the matatu
belonged to ATS Sacco and was unfamiliar with the route.
He cited reckless overtaking on the narrow road as the
likely cause.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Gilgil Sub-County
Hospital mortuary as investigations continue.
