Monday, September 29, 2025 - Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni has sounded the alarm over what he terms as a strategic misstep by the opposition that could pave the way for President William Ruto’s re-election in 2027.
Speaking on Spice FM,
Kioni, an ally of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, criticised the opposition’s
approach to selecting a presidential flagbearer, warning against decisions made
by a small group of leaders without wider consultation.
He cited the 2022 Azimio la Umoja campaign as a cautionary
tale, arguing that Raila Odinga and Martha Karua’s defeat stemmed from a
top-down nomination process that alienated voters.
“Repeating that mistake will only please Ruto in State
House,” Kioni said.
Kioni also cautioned against fielding a candidate from Mt.
Kenya, suggesting it will fracture the region’s vote and bolster Ruto’s grip.
“Splitting that block, as Ruto is already doing, gives him a
clear path to another 15 years in State House,” he warned.
His remarks come amid growing uncertainty within the United
Opposition over its 2027 candidate.
Former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, who attended Jubilee’s
National Delegates Congress last week, is reportedly among the frontrunners.
Uhuru Kenyatta affirmed Jubilee’s intent to field candidates
nationwide and launch a grassroots recruitment drive.
Kioni added that Jubilee stands with Matiang’i, citing
unfair treatment within the opposition.
