Tuesday, August 12, 2025 - Transport Cabinet Secretary, Davis Chirchir, has issued fresh directives to road users following the deaths of more than 80 people in road crashes over the past four days.
In a statement to Kenyans, Chirchir urged drivers,
pedestrians, boda boda riders, cyclists, and all transport operators to
strictly follow road safety rules.
“Full compliance with stipulated speed limits, vehicle
maintenance standards, proper licensing, and traffic regulations is not
optional but a collective responsibility that safeguards lives,” he said.
The CS stressed that road accidents are both predictable and
preventable if all road users cooperate.
Official data shows 2,933 people have died in crashes
between January and August 10th, 2025, with 80 fatalities recorded
in just the last four days.
To curb the rising toll, Chirchir said a multi-agency team
is carrying out safety audits on high-risk road sections.
The teams will identify deficiencies, reconstruct accident
scenes, and submit technical recommendations within seven days.
He affirmed that his Ministry will continue implementing
both short and medium-term measures under Kenya’s National Road Safety Action
Plan 2024–2028.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) will also
intensify public education and awareness programs to encourage safe road
behavior.
“This holistic and collaborative approach will go a long way
in reducing fatalities and injuries on our roads,” Chirchir said.
